Kleever, also referred as Kleaver, is an undead, hovering sword that appears in the Donkey Kong series. It first appears in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. Its name is a pun on "cleaver", a giant knife.

Appearances in video games[edit]

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest[edit]

Kleever makes its first appearance within Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. It serves as the second boss of the game and is located at the end of Crocodile Cauldron in Kleever's Kiln.

When the battle starts, Kleever emerges from the lava, causing Diddy and Dixie to be scared. It then throws two fireballs at the monkeys. A kannonball is then dropped from the sky. This item has to be thrown at Kleever so hooks fall down that lead to the other side of the stage on the right. Diddy and Dixie have to jump hook to hook to reach the other side where another kannonball lies. Once again this kannonball has to be thrown at Kleever. Kleever has to be hit one more time so that it emerges into the lava before coming out again.

A few seconds later, Kleever comes out of the lava with a new tactic; charging itself into Diddy and Dixie. Hooks drop once more, except this time the hooks fill the entire lava gap and even up and down. These can be used to reach two Banana Coins that lie at the top-right area of the level. After the other side is reached, Kleever tries to stab Diddy and Dixie using itself. The two must throw the kannonball at Kleever a fourth time so it gains another new tactic. Kleever's new tactic involves it swaying itself repeatedly as it follows Diddy and Dixie. Diddy and Dixie have to repeat twice more so that Kleever is defeated as it breaks apart into tiny pieces. Krem Quay then is open for exploration and a Kremkoin is obtained.

In the Game Boy Advance re-release, two small Kleevers are sent out by Kerozene after it slams its fists on the ground when the battle starts. It sends out two Kleevers twice as its first two attacks against Diddy and Dixie. These Kleever species repeatedly sway back and forth. A kannonball can be used to defeat it, though it takes only one hit, unlike the regular Kleever.

Donkey Kong Land 2[edit]

Kleever reappears in Donkey Kong Land 2. It is once again the second boss of the game and is relocated in Krem Cauldron, a fusion of Crocodile Cauldron and Krem Quay. Oddly, the name for it in the game is now Kleaver instead of Kleever.

When the battle starts, Kleever sways itself while only in one place. It then throws two fireballs at Diddy or Dixie along with a barrel that contains a kannonball inside of it. Just like in Donkey Kong Country 2, Diddy or Dixie have to throw a kannonball at Kleever to attack it. When it is hit, Krocheads, rather than the original hooks, appear out of the lava. The Krockheads can be used as a platform to cross to the other side of the stage. When this pattern is repeated another time, Kleever gains a new tactic; charging itself into Diddy or Dixie. When it tries to attack the two, there is a kannon that randomly appears. The Kongs have to utilize this kannon to shoot out a kannonball at Kleever while Kleever is in the air hovering back and forth above land. If Kleever is hit by a kannonball, it collapses into the lava. This allows Kazy Kremland to be open for access and a Kremkoin to be gained.
